Phase 2: The Reign of Terror
Now that the former king of France has been executed things seem like they were going to go well, however, this is just the beginning for a new and bloody chapter for the revolution, "The Reign of Terror"
Later in 1793, after the king's execution, the Convention decided to establish the Committee of Public Safety (The CPS). The CPS functioned as the executive branch of the new French government. Within the CPS, there were two representative factions: The Girondins and the Montagnards. However, in May, the Girondins were removed from the CPS, leaving the Montagnards in full control. Under the leadership of Maximilian Robespierre, they implemented extremely radical policies to counter the perceived threats from the so-called "enemies of the revolution."
The Montagnards attacked early leaders of the revolution, the remaining royal family, and many Girondins. The Montagnards executed hundreds and thousands of people and arrested just as many people. Later on, a lot of people really wanted the reign of terror to be put to an end. At least 300,000 people have died in the Reign of Terror
Later in June though, the Montagnards were later taken down in what was known as the Thermidorian reaction because of a coup d’etat and Robespierre and many of his followers were executed the next day.
